Research

My research contributes directly to knowledge and understanding of fundamental physical volcanology, and the links between volcanic and hydrothermal processes. My research has been funded by the Australian Research Council (ARC), the University of Tasmania, CODES, geological surveys and the minerals exploration industry.

I have undertaken field-based research on diverse volcanic terrains, including both modern (USA, Chile, Argentina, Japan, Greece, Vanuatu, Papua New Guinea, New Zealand, Indonesia, Iceland) and ancient (all Australian states, USA, Portugal, Spain, Fiji, Argentina, Peru, Dominican Republic, Mongolia, Algeria, Eritrea, Serbia) volcanic successions. I have developed particular expertise in textural interpretation of altered volcanic rocks, volcanic facies analysis, volcanic eruption and emplacement processes, and volcanic influences on ore formation.

I have 115 papers published in peer-reviewed international journals. I am senior author of the book, ”Volcanic Textures”, published by CODES, University of Tasmania. This book is widely used by academic and industry geoscientists working in volcanic successions. At least 4800 copies of the book have been sold worldwide
